What happens if I lose my API Key for my AppDefense Appliance?

In the past we always stressed the need to save the Manager URL, UUID and API key that was given to you when you provisioned a new appliance in AppDefense. This was because there was no way for us to get a new API key for that appliance and if it was lost a new appliance would have to be deployed.

 

Now with a recent update we allow you to regenerate the API key for a given appliance in case your forgot to save it or lost the one you saved. This will save some time and headache of having to deploy a whole new appliance in case of needing to re register the appliance.

 

Step 1: Navigate to the "Appliances" tab under settings and select the appliance you wish to regenerate the API key for.

 

Step 2: Click on "ACTIONS" and then click on "Regenerate API Key".

Step 3: A popup will appear with the information you need to copy to take to your AppDefense appliance to register it with the SaaS manager

Step 4: Re-register the appliance using the newly generated API Key following these directions: Step 1C: Register AppDefense Appliance With vCenter Server

ESXi 6 & Long Boot Times

3 Node Cluster Consisting of:

OS: ESXi 6.0.0 2615704 booting from (SD Card)

HW: Dell R820 / 512GB / Xeon E5-4620 4x8

Storage 2x: ISP2432-based 4Gb FC PCI Express HBA

NIC 2x: Broadcom QLogic 57810 10Gb Dual Port

25 LUNs over FC provisioned from a VNX 5600

1 x 2 Node Win 2012 & SQL 2014 WSFC & MSCS - 3 "Phyiscal" RDMs which are mapped on 1 LUN to 2 VMs.

 

Disclaimer - Since upgrading all hosts to 2615704 the ESXi hosts were not updated/patched/restarted

 

  • We have a 3 node cluster identical with the above hardware and software config.
  • For one reason or another I decided to restart one of the nodes (and with this occasion what better time to perform updates?!).
  • 1 node was patched to the latest updates via Update Manager (2809209)
  • During the remediation process I noticed that it was taking far longer than normal to boot - up to 1 hour
  • iDRAC opened it was stuck at a few stages, one of them being nfs41client
  • ALT+F12 displayed the following results (similar to VMware KB:    FCoE storage connections fail when LUNs are presented to the host on different VLANs):
    • T.363Z cpu2:4616)<6>host2: fip: fcoe_ctlr_vlan_request() is done
    • T.365Z cpu0:4606)<6>host2: fip: host2: FIP VLAN ID unavail. Retry VLAN discovery.
    • T.365Z cpu0:4606)<6>host2: fip: fcoe_ctlr_vlan_request() is done
    • T.366Z cpu2:4622)<6>host2: fip: host2: FIP VLAN ID unavail. Retry VLAN discovery.
  • Thinking that it was a new driver issue off I go and apply this fix - Zenfolio | Michael Davis | Broadcom BCM57810 FCoE and ESXi
  • No luck - booting time still takes a long, long time
  • Decide to rebuild the host it as was getting silly in the hours spent troubleshooting
  • Disconnected my FC cables from the storage HBA, re-install ESXi from VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0-2494585.x86_64-Dell_Customized-A00.iso and boot it up - instantly noticing that startup time was back to normal
  • Proceed to reconnect storage HBA, do some network config and restart - now starting up takes as long as before
  • While waiting for the system to startup I come across this VMware KB:    ESXi/ESX hosts with visibility to RDM LUNs being used by MSCS nodes with RDMs may take a long time to sta… 
  • I proceed to set my LUN which contains the RDM mappings for my 2 MSCS nodes
    • esxcli storage core device setconfig -d naa.xxxx --perennially-reserved=true
    • Verify that it is set with esxcli storage core device list -d naa.xxxx and proceed to reboot
  • Reboot still takes a long time...

 

So I am not sure

  • if --perennially-reserved=true still applies for ESXi 6.0?
    • of course to really confirm if the other 2 nodes in the VMware cluster are experiencing this issue (related to RDMs) I would have to restart at least one of them
  • if it's a driver related thing?
  • if I have missed something else?
  • if I am barking at the wrong tree?

Query Event DB to find who has connected to a pool over a certain period of time

I need to get a list of users that have connected to a certain pool over the last 2 weeks in Horizon.

 

I have tried to query the db with little success as my SQL is rubbish. Any help appreciated.

uploading Win10Pro ISO to the DataStore issue

Hi all, I have downloaded the latest version of Windows 10 Pro and am struggling trying to upload it to the datastore. At first it was a certificate issue which is now resolved but I’m reading that the size of the new Windows 10 Pro file is over 5GB in size. I don’t know if that is an issue or not but I am still stuck.

 

To resolve the certificate issue, I followed the following doc and that fixed that issue

In my research, I see that WinSCP will do the trick once connected to the DataStore. So now, I have WinSCP downloaded and installed but I don’t have a clue what settings I need to access the DataStore

Restrict vm's to vlans

Hello all,

 

I'm having a challenge.

We are having multiple resource pools and we want to restrict a VM to that resource pool. So we don't want a user the be able to create a network between two resource pools. Even if he has full rights on the two resource pools.

I have no idee of this is possible and is how.

All vm's in one resource pool are allowed to have network connection to eachother but not to vm's in other resources pools.

ESXi 6.7 Cannot ping Addresses from Test Management Network under ESXi configuration

Good morning.

I am having an issue with 2 new blades.   I am running a HPE c7000 blade system.  I have 6 Proliant BL460c Gen 6 blades, 2 Proliant 460c Gen 8 blades, and I have just purchased 2 Proliant 460c Gen 10 blades.  The original 8 blades are running ESXi 4.1 and the 2 new blades I have installed ESXi 6.7 on.  All blades are configured with the same management network and vlan.  For some reason I am not able to get the management interface on my 2 Gen 10 blades to ping my gateway IP address even though they are configured on the same IP network.  I had this issue 5 years ago when I installed the Gen 8 blades but was able to work with HP to get issue resolved.  They are not giving me much help currently.  Said it is a software related issue with ESXi.  I think the issue had something to do with the FlexxFabric 10GB 2 port 536FLB adapters and their configuration.  When I look at the onboard administrator for my blade both the Gen 8 and Gen 10 blades show the adapters as HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port.   When I check the network status on my ESXi the Gen 8 blades have them labeled as vmnic0 (NIC Port 1) and the Gen 10 blades have them labeled as vmnic0 (Embedded Flexible LOM 1 Port 1).  Not sure if this may be what is causing an issue.  Maybe a configuration issue with the network cards themselves.  Thank you for any assistance that you can offer.   Chris

Installing 6.7 ESXI on Dell T410

I have been running 5.5 ESXI for a while now and looking ot jump to 6.7 on the same server Dell T410.  Has anyone had any success in doing this?  It's for a home lab.

Upgrade to 6.0- Issue with a blade and a vm

To start, I am upgrading my firm's environment from 5.5 to 6.0. Vcenter is currently at 6.0, and we are now applying host profiles/upgrades to the individual esxi blades. one blade in particular, we cannot do anything with because it has a VM on it that no longer exists. Before I started working here something happened that caused 2 individual vms  that are the same(one name AD.working, and the other named AD).  Both of them are pointing to the same location on the datastore. AD.working is what we need to remove,  but we cannot do anything with it. Remove from Inventory and Delete from Disk are greyed out. I tried going into the web client and adding ad.working into a folder to remove from there, and it fails out with "the attempted operation cannot be performed in the current state ("powered on)". I tried going into CLI and there is no vm currently even registered on the blade itself. We can't delete it, power it off, enter maintenance mode on the host, remove host from inventory, nothing. I would appreciate any insight that can be provided. Thank you!

Guest VMs not automatically failing back over to failed host after it comes back on-line

Hello Community,

 

Hoping you all could help. I have a two host cluster that is HA enabled. Yesterday, one of the host failed and the guest VMs successfully migrated to the second host. Once the host came back on-line

the migrated VMs did not "return home" to the original host. I looked at the HA settings but do not see where that control is an option and that's why I assumed it should automatically happen. Could you all perhaps tell me what I am missing here?

Windows 10 on an external SSD issue

Hello, having a bit of a problem trying to install Windows 10 to an external SSD drive using VM Ware Fusion 11.1.0. I will try to explain in as much detail as possible with the hope that someone can tell me what I am doing wrong.

I would very grateful for any help.

 

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro and I am trying to install Windows 10 to an external SSD (500gb Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD) as I want to be able to use Windows on the rare occasion I have no other choice. I want to put it on an external drive as I do not want to use the MacBooks internal storage for something I would probably not use that often.

Everything runs smoothly until I get to the part where I have to unplug and re-plug the SSD so that it can be connected to the VM Ware windows installation.

The Windows does not find the drive and I get the bing bong alert every few seconds as windows tries to find the drive and then fails (much like if you were to continuously plug and unplug the drive).

I have attached some images showing messages I am getting and also an error in the device manager. I believe it must be a setting or driver issue with the VM Ware windows as the drive SSD drive works fine on Mac OS and also if I plug it into a Windows PC. 

 

If you need any further information in order to help, please ask and I will do my best to provide it.

Trouble installing update 15.5.0

Today I tried to install  latest update of VMware Workstation Player but I wasn´table to do it. After starting, I get follwing message:

Ok. Restarted computer and started program again. Same message. and if I click on NO, nothing happens and the installations doesn´t go on.

How can I fix it?

Host displayed in the wrong compute resource?

Hi all,

I have a vcenter with 2 Clusters like this:

 

Cluster A: 4 hosts

Cluster B: 2 hosts

 

I moved 1 host from Cluster A to Cluster B, but when I want to migrate VMs in cluster B to that new host it is not being displayed in the Hosts compute resources list, for my surprise it is still being displayed in the compute resources list but in Cluster A whe it is living in Cluster B.

What could be causing this?

 

This is Vcenter and ESXI 6.5.

Has anyone been able to invoke the VMware BOOTX64.efi from a BOOTX64.efi (grub.efi) menu?

I am trying to build a USB stick that will EFI boot and install a variety of Linux's (SLES, RHEL, CentOS) and VMware.  I have been able to create a menu and get all but the VMware piece working.  I have tried a chainload of the BOOTX64.efi that came out of the EFI directory on the VMware ESX5i install media, which seems to correctly invoke the binary, but the arguments get messed up and I get a "file not found".  Does anyone have insights into how tio get this working?

Managed machines per resource

Hi

 

I'm trying to write a script that would automate moving hundreds of VMs from one reservation to another.  I used PowerShell and CloudClient to do the actual move but now I'm trying to figure out how to get a list of VMs that belong to the old reservation. I know it could be done easily within the UI but I don't see a way of exporting that list from there.  The export button used to exist in previous versions of vRA but for some reason I can't find it in 7.4. So does anyone know if there is a way to get a CSV export by either using vRO or CloudClient.

Migrating from Macbook Air to Macbook Pro

I have just migrated from a macbook air to a macbook pro using the Apple migration tool.

 

When I attempted to open my VMware Fusion virtual machine running Windows 10 I got a bunch of errors that the display requirements were different and a few other things.

 

When I shutdown/restart the virtual machine I am just getting a blank screen. 

 

So how do I configure things so it will work with the new processor / machine?

DEM 9.9 and easy start for office 365

There is no Easy Start available for Office 365 to be able to have preconfigured config items, shortcuts, condition sets ...

 

While installing Office 365 for a client in stead of Office 2016 I noticed that Office 365 installs by default in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 whereas Office 2016 installs in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office16.

Therfore the shortcuts and conditions are different for Office 365 compared to Office 2016

Possibly some of the import/export config files are also different.

 

Does someone already have a good set of import/export config files, shortcut definition files, condition sets dor Office 365 that he/she wants to share?
