I downloaded a few ISOs from archive.org to install on my XP VMWare virtual machine because I really wanted to listen to the MIDIs on VGMusic that were made for XG actually in XG. You have heard about the elephant in the room, didn't you?

large.xgonly5.gif.c7cea199cccf4342bce696ef82251e16.gif

(Sorry if the images are messed up, but they all say XG only)

The two isos I used were https://archive.org/details/CDV73B1 and https://archive.org/details/3DS724Acd

While in the process of installing the software on the isos, I noticed that the programs I installed wouldn't load. I tried to run a few applications that had nothing to do with what was on the isos, but they wouldn't load either. I decided maybe I had overworked it and maybe I should shutdown and start it up again tomorrow to see if it'd sorted itself out.

When I got home the next day, I started the VM and when I got to the login screen, I clicked on my username, my username moved to the center and then the machine crashed. I tried again and it still crashed.

I could login to Safe Mode so I could try to fix the problem there.

Help and Support Center had no solutions from what I remember and System Restore never works.

I got from one website that you could go to msconfig and uncheck the boxes in the General tab. While this got rid of the crash, it gave me another problem.

My username would move to the center, the Loading your personal settings... text will appear, but then it will hang. I can move the mouse, but other than that, nothing happens. I couldn't even login in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking anymore.

But I could login in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Safe Mode with Command Prompt still starts Windows, but loads Command Prompt instead of explorer on startup. (so it's not the same thing as the Restart in MSDOS mode option in the shutdown menu of older versions of Windows. That used to restart the computer but remain in DOS instead of start Windows) Ironically, you can run explorer from Command Prompt and it'll work. (it works for me too)

So I sent my computer to the repair shop in town to see if they could fix it and not even they could get it working.

So after I got my computer sent back I created a new virtual machine, installed Windows XP on it and then went and installed everything from the first ISO one by one.

The first thing I installed was Yamaha MIDPLUG. After I installed it, nothing happened. So I knew MIDPLUG wasn't causing the problem.

Then I went on to install the S-YXG50 Softsynthesiser. After I installed it, I was prompted to restart the computer. So I restarted the machine and it crashed during the login screen like originally. It turned out that the culprit was the S-YXG50 Softsynthesiser. Luckily I was prepared for that, because I tried to uninstall almost everything installed from those two ISOs including S-YXG50. Except the uninstaller for S-YXG50 didn't remove two dlls because they were in use. (the dlls were sxgb.dll and sxgbsys.dll) Either this is an older version from 1999 (when XP was on the way) or that version was rushed out the door. It is likely to have been rushed out the door because if it is old, then that would make little sense because XP was on the way.

Tl;dr, I had a VMWare XP virtual machine. I installed S-YXG50 Softsynthesiser using two isos; https://archive.org/details/CDV73B1 and https://archive.org/details/3DS724Acd.

When prompted I selected 'Restart Later'. However, I was unable to run various applications. After rebooting, XP booted and presented the 'Users' options - but when I selected any one of the User accounts, it seemed that the profile starts to load (the user logo moves to the centre of the screen) ... but then crashes and restarts.

I was able to boot in Safe Mode. From there I went into msconfig and in the General tab unchecked Process SYSTEM.INI, PROCESS WIN.INI and Load System Services. Now the user profile starts to load, but then hangs i.e. does not enter the reboot cycle.

I would like to recover this virtual machine, as I don't have a recent backup or restore point.

So now I am here wondering if you can help me out so I can get back on track. I don't usually post on computer error related forums, but I feel that I have to because I am really stuck. Any help would be great.

  Thank you.

Running Hyper-V on a VM

$

A few days ago I was doing some testing with Hyper-V. As I can easily create a Windows Server using vSphere (6.5 in my case), I decided create my Hyper-V host on a VM.

In order to get this to work I created a VM running Windows Server 2019 and then I needed to do some customization to it.

VM CPU Settings

When creating the VM, change the CPU/MMU Virtualization settings to Hardware CPU and MMU.

Screenshot 2019-05-04 at 13.47.39.png

After the VM is created, make sure it's Powered Off, and navigate to its folder under the Storage menu on vSphere.

Download the <VM Name>.vmx file to your PC and open it with a Text Editor.

In the end of the file, add those lines:

hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE"

vhv.enable = "TRUE"

Screenshot 2019-05-04 at 13.57.09.png

Save the VMX file and upload it back to the VMs folder. In my case, instead of overwriting the file in the datastore, I renamed it to <VM Name>.vmx.old.

Screenshot 2019-05-04 at 12.58.33.png

Installing Hyper-V

Power on the VM, install Windows and VMware Tools if you haven't done so, and then go to Server Manager.

Click Add roles and features and follow the wizard to install Hyper-V.

Screenshot 2019-05-04 at 14.22.40.png

Restart the Server as requested, then launch Hyper-V Manager.

Screenshot 2019-05-04 at 14.31.01.png

As a quick test, create a new VM with the default values (click New > Virtual Machine and then follow the wizard). From my testing, you would get an error message when trying to Power On this VM if something is wrong with the Hyper-V VM.

Networking

After creating my test VM, I noticed that I could not ping anywhere in the network apart from itself and the Hyper-V Host. I checked the Virtual Switch Manager on Hyper-V and also the Networking settings on the VM, and all seemed to be configured as expected. The way I got it to work was by going to the ESXi Console and enabling Promiscuous mode and Forged transmits in the vSwitch that was connected to the Hyper-V Server VM.

vSphere 6 integration plugin and Microsoft Edge browser

Is anyone able to get the client integration plugin from the vcenter6 U2 iso to work in Microsoft Edge on Win 10? The plugin will install but does not seem to really be active in the Edge browser. Everytime I try to upload files to a datastore the plugin keeps downloading again. Maybe Edge is just not supported yet?

Esxi 6 Install problems - No Network Adapters

I cannot install Esxi on my embedded computer running an intel i3-3217UE with Intel i210-AT Ethernet controller. the Intel i210 is supported under 6.0, and we have tried using a customized version of Esxi 5.5 to get around the problem but that not working either. Could it be that the embedded computer is needs a processor with VT-d in order to see the NIC?

Can't Restart Instant Clone - Fails to Startup

$

I have a eval environment that I am testing. I'm using a Eval of Windows 10 as well. I've done a Windows 10 install and installed the proper Horizon agents. I have a new installation of Active Directory with very little customization done to it that Horizon and the Instant Clones use. When I create an instant clone desktop pool, the clones will create and startup and show provisioned. I'm able to log into them with out issue. As soon as I reboot any of them, I see the clone go into maintenance mode and then back into provisioning mode as it starts back up. At some point, it does look like its back up and running but then it shuts down. Horizon shows the machine as "Error" with the warning: "Resync of VM has failed: Fault type is SERVER_FAULT_FATAL - Runtime error: We only support DvsPortGroup and OpaqueNetwork as the target network for instant clones". If I remove the desktop with the error, Horizon will delete the machine and recreate it and it will startup and work correctly. If I manually startup the VM from VSphere, I'm able to use the direct Horizon connection to access the VM and when I try to log in it says the "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed".

Any suggestions on what I can do to make this work?

Unable to determine path: Unable to determine router for Gateway IP 10.10.40.1

Hi guys!

I've successfully installed and integrated VRNI 4.0 with my vSphere 6.7 and NSX 6.4.4

But i have one little issue - VM Path Topology doesnt't work correctly for VMs which are located at regular (non-NSX) Port Groups

For example Path to Internet throws the following error 'Unable to determine path: Unable to determine router for Gateway IP 10.10.40.1'

10.10.40.1 is the gateway (SVI) on a physical switch

The same thing with a VM on NSX network works just fine

NSX-T 2.4: Node cert replacement via API fails with "com.vmware.nsx.management.container.exceptions.InvalidOwnerException" in nsxapi.log

$

I've gone through this about half-a-dozen times with different types of certificates each with the same message of failure in /var/log/proton/nsxapi.log. This same process worked fine with NSX-T 2.3. Let me explain my topology (screenshots for sauce).

  • NSX-T 2.4
  • 3 nodes
    • cz-nest-nsxtm01 (10.2.21.16)
    • cz-nest-nsxtm02 (10.2.21.17)
    • cz-nest-nsxtm03 (10.2.21.18)
  • 1 HA VIP address (ILB)
    • cz-nest-nsxtm (10.2.21.19)

I have referenced the steps in VVD 5.0.1 and used the CertGen utility to create certificates signed by my internal enterprise CA. When replacement on cz-nest-nsxtm01 with the node cert did not work, I attempted steps with a self-signed cert only with the same failure. I upload the CA cert and upload the node certs, including the one for the cluster IP. SAN contains FQDN and IP. I don't think this is an issue of cert contents.

I retrieve the ID of the cert in question. For more details of the cert, if I curl to /api/v1/trust-management/certificates it returns the following:

{

"pem_encoded": <REDACTED>,

"used_by": [],

"resource_type": "certificate_signed",

"id": "67eb0a1c-e06c-476e-980a-08519b90d16f",

"display_name": "cz-nest-nsxtm01",

"tags": [

  {

"scope": "policyPath",

"tag": "/infra/certificates/cz-nest-nsxtm01"

  }

  ],

"_create_user": "nsx_policy",

"_create_time": 1556977318572,

"_last_modified_user": "nsx_policy",

"_last_modified_time": 1556977318572,

"_system_owned": false,

"_protection": "REQUIRE_OVERRIDE",

"_revision": 0

}

I post to the necessary URI as follows:

curl -k -u admin:VMware1!' -X POST "https://cz-nest-nsxtm01.domain.com/api/v1/node/services/http?action=apply_certificate&certificate_id=5c4f0ee9-00cb-4acd-8431-07903767204a"

In response I receive:

{  "error_code": 36235,  "error_message": "Error updating certificate usage.",  "module_name": "node-services"
}

Upon examination of /var/log/proton/nsxapi.log I find the following messages logged after the operation returns failure (markup by VS Code for convenience):

As can be seen, it appears to be complaining about rights assigned to the user (admin) executing the POST, which doesn't make sense because it's the admin account. Otherwise, my other thought was it's refusing the operation because the 3 appliances have already been clustered. In the VVD procedure for this it makes no special mention of node leadership. But it does have the user replace the cert on the nodes individually prior to a cluster IP being assigned.

I've also checked the official NSX-T 2.4 documentation (doc rev. 12 April 2019; PDF p536) and there is again no special mention of anything that was different in this process from 2.3.

Anyone seen (or tried) this? If I don't hear anything I'll try to break the cluster, delete the other nodes, redeploy, and try again.

EDIT 1:  Even if I break the cluster IP (reset action) but leave all three nodes up and try the replacement, I get the same error in the logs as before.

EDIT 2:  I destroyed all the manager nodes except the first, rebooted, and tried the replacement. It failed yet again with the same messages. So I'm pretty much out of ideas here.

Using VMware on Windows 1903 host machine cannot turn on guest machine

Hello, I got a problem after upgrade to Windows Insider Preview 1903 18362.30 x64 on host machine.

CPU : I5-8400

RAM : 16G

Host OS : Windows 10 1903 x64 18362.30 (Latest WIP)

VMWare Version : 15.0.4 build-12990004

Other Status :

"bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype OFF"  (Means that Windows Native hypervisor already turned off)

"Memory integrity guard OFF"

"Credential Guard OFF"

Before I upgraded to Windows Insider Preview 18362.30, I was using Windows 10 RS5 x64 as a host operating system.

I could run any VM guest machine without any problem.

But, after I upgrade to Windows 10 1903, I cannot run any VM guest.

Guest screen only shows a black screen, and nothing happens.

What I can do is just rebooting machine. Cannot terminate vmware-vmx.exe process.

Anybody has same issue like this? And if anybody has solution it will be very thankful.

Thanks.

NSX-T DFW Protection without N-VDS

Is is it possible to protect my VMs' that have interfaces connected to a regular port group on a VDS?  We have a second interface on a number of VMs that are able to talk to our physical backup appliance on the same VLAN.  We want to prevent the VMs from communicating with each other through the backup interface by using the DFW.  We feel better about not having our heaviest traffic flow through the Edge VMs so we do not want to use the N-VDS for those interfaces.  Is our understanding of the N-VDS flawed?  How can we protect interfaces that are not part of an N-VDS?
