Need help for ESXi 5.5 booting slower due to SCSI Reservation Conflict

Hi,

I currently update one of my ESXi in 5.5 U3 build 4345813.

Its in a vCenter and works well but it still has an issue when rebooting, it takes time (~10min) for booting, it is stuck at " vmw_satp_alua loaded successfully"...

So i have checked the log and see  a lot of :

I've tried to fix it with the KB 1016106 by using "esxcli storage core device setconfig -d naa.id --perennially-reserved=true" for most of my RAW LUN

but the problem isn't fixed with that.

Does someone have an idea about it  ?

Trying to determine which vendor to believe for supported driver version

$

I am in a situation where I have some IBM system x boxes (7143s) that have some Emulex FC and HBA cards in them. Of course those cards  were OEM cards by IBM. IBM would provide the firmware and I would find a supported driver on the HCL.

I am running esxi 6U2, was v5.5. And I am trying to get everything patched before we upgrade some San software, which of course has is its own compatibility matrix.

Needless to say what has happened since we purchased these ages ago is:

1. Lenovo has the IBM system X now. They seem to have not updated firmware in ages on the card.

2. Avago now has Emulex now, and they dont even seem to recognized that any of Emulex cards were ever OEMd. But I can find firmware and driver for the model that was OEM

So I have the VMware HCL giving me a recommended driver version according to the DID, etc. which is rather old driver. I also have Avago giving me a different version but it appears it is for the Emulex model of card, not the same model that IBM OEM.

It is kind of maddening. I am just not sure what to believe. Is the HCL up to date? Will the Avago non-oem emulex work?

What do others do in this situation. I have opened up support calls with VMware and IBM, both gave different answers and didnt seem to vested in the solution.

File Virtual Disk.vmdk is huge 37Gb but is NO LONGER a part of my VM but rather "Virtual Disk-000002.vmdk" is the Disk File so I want to DELETE it but it says it still needs it, but for what!!!

$

Somehow, don't ask me how I got to this point, but it is an inherited VM from someone that I have been playing with. Im using VMWare Workstation 12 Player for windows.  The Hard Disk is set for 40 Gb but I have a 3 disks added up that go way beyond that, BUT the "Virtual Disk.vmdk" is basically a dud and taking up 37 Gb but I have no reason to believe any of that file is actually an active part of my disk space when I am using the VM. I simply want to delete it but if I delete it (I backed it up in case I needed it and now I am finding I need it, good thing I did that), I get a message "The parent of this disk could not be opened", Meanwhile the "Disk File" property in Virtual Machine Settings is set to "Virtual Disk-000002.vmdk" which is 21 Gb and THAT is the file I believe to be the actual one that gets used every time I use my VM.

I'd like to eliminate the dependency on a 37 Gb file that I believe isnt even accessed !  (the last date/time is July 2016 and I certainly have used the VM regularly for the last couple months and the "Virtual Disk-000002.vmdk:" does get updated every time I use the VM).

Thanks

dd

Hard disk space in VM not reclaimed after deleting files

Running VMware Workstation Pro v12.5

I created a disk for a NEW VM from scratch and brought the VM into operation Running Debian Linux as the guest. At one point the size got up to 21 Gb due to the copying of some zipped files into the guest from the host. After deleting the zip I expected the actual size in my host (Windows 7) to decrease to more closely match the size of the drive in the VM, but it has never come back down.

Here is the output from df -h to show what the size of the drive is in Linux, confirming size of 13 Gb out of 50 Gb drive.

Boxer-SIM:~# cd /

Boxer-SIM:/# df -h

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda1              48G   13G   35G  27% /

tmpfs                 3.9G  4.0K  3.9G   1% /dev/shm

But as you can see in my Windows host, more space it being taken up by the Boxer-SIM.vmdk disk. (output is while VM is running, same result as when powered off)

I know the system has the capacity to provide more space up to the 50Gb limit as I need more space, but on the flip side, can't it also decrement the amount of space used as I delete files? (Linux doesnt have any recycle bin that I am aware of where deleted files are kept, does it?)

SCO Unix 5.0.4.on VMWARE: a successful P2V story

$

0

Part of our bussiness (Progress and Cobol software) still ran on a Compaq Proliant PII server (a piece of hardware running very long after its expected lifetime). The server was a SCO Open Server Release 5.0.4 of 1997 and there was no feasible upgrade path to any current OS. This meant any hardware replacement would have to be compatible with 1997 era Unix drivers. This was a big problem, since it's almost impossible to find a decent and suitable hardware replacement.

We decided to convert it to an ESX VM - (ESXi 4.1.0 server in our case).

Unfortunately SCO OSR5 isn't on the list of ESX compatible operating systems, and besides that, our aim was to convert the whole existing installation, not starting from scratch (avoiding software installation, creating users, printers, etc)

Research on websites and forums gave us some clues, but only after some trial and error configurations, we successfully solved the problem. This document's intention is to give advice and hope to IT people out there in similar situations.

The first problem was to transfer the disk image onto the ESX server.

We first tried Acronis for disk imaging but in this case it didn't work. Instead we used g4u, a handy free utility that copies the exact disk geometry (a slow but worthy operation) and uploaded the image to a ftp server on your LAN.

Then, we created a VM on the ESXi server.

We selected SCO Openserver 5 as the operating system, thin IDE disks (here we selected bigger disks to fit future space requirements) and the proposed flexible network adapter.

We booted the VM with the g4u bootcd, and deployed the image(s).

Booting in normal mode leads to kernel panic warnings. Instead, at the boot prompt, we entered unix.safe. Then when it asked for CTR D, or our password, we entered our password to enter maintenance mode. We established an ansi TERM environment.

Then we selected scoadmin and removed all the Compaq drivers for the Proliant hardware:

Scoadmin----software manager---compaq extended feature supplement--- remove software

and relinked the kernel.

Once done, we booted up fine.

The network config had to be updated but this was easily done from the SCOadmin menu:

First, we removed the old LAN adapter (if present) and rebooted. The SCO's VM recognised the ESX AMD virtual NIC without needing a new driver.

We added that adapter and set up our suitable network environment, relinked kernel and rebooted.

Then, if we had created bigger virtual disks than the physical ones, we created new divisions/partitions for the unused disk space, through normal Unix commands (divvy and/or scoadmin), and set up mounting parameters.

From here on, normal backup procedures as with the now decomissioned physical server. Also from the ESXi server vsphere client, we chose to export the entire VM as OVF periodically, for disaster recovery purposes.

All the users accessed the applications via a telnet based terminal client so nothing had changed as far as they were concerned.

Difference between central "config.ini" and "settings.ini" ?

$

0

When I go (under Win 7) to directory:

C:\ProgramData\VMware\

then there are a couple of sub-directories. Two of them or of particular interest:

VMware Player
and
VMware Workstation

Since Vmware renamed a couple of month ago VMware Player into VMware Workstation player the first subdirectory is deprecated.
So only VMWare Workstation is active.

Correct?

In both of the subdirectories mentioned above two files are stored:
config.ini

and

settings.ini

Whats the difference?

Third question:
Are all parameters for *.vmx files valid for these two files as well?

How to access vCenter Server?

$
0
0

I know this sounds like a really dumb question, but Googling just isn't helping.  Lots of stuff about installing and using, but nothing about "Here's how to actually get to it"!

First, my knowledge of VMware is limited to standalone ESXi hypervisors.  I've inherited what's supposed to be a cluster, but they're all used as standalone because "We could never make it work".  Well, I want to make it work.  There is a Windows VM that's supposed to be the vCenter Server, and in Programs and Features I can see vCenter Server, but that's it... I have no idea where to go to get into it and start figuring it out.

Once I do get in, I'll want to recover whatever licensing info there is to be able to access the downloads... I'm strongly tempted to just get vCSA and use it.

Is VMplayer able to open URL from VM in Host machine browser?

$

I am just asking if anybody who runs VMplayer can use that feature?

how to check:

inside windows VM go to Start > Default Programs > Set default program > Chose "Default Host Application" to open http/https URLs

then open any application inside VM for example Outlook with any external URL and click on that URL, (or just run this in CMD window: C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools>VMwareHostOpen.exe --url http://google.com)

there should be 2 options:

1) URL will be opened in default browser on your Host Machine

2) you will get error like: "Make sure the virtual machine's configuration allows the guest to open host applications"

please give me your results with guest and host OS you are running, thanks!

New-NetworkAdapter not working! Nor is Set-NetworkAdapter...

$

Hello all,

Needless to say I had a large issue with the vmxnet3 adapter for a customer and they requested all NICs be rolled over to the e1000e (Ugly!) but it was what they knew worked for them.

So I started to write a script using the latest PowerCLI.

This include cmdlets Net-NetworkAdapter, but this has limitation of it functionality which is not correct.

Specifically on MAC Addresses.

You see to make sure the systems which are using DHCP get back their original address so that there are no changes required to the Load Balancers we have to make sure they maintain the MAC's.

the MAC on a test system was 00:50:56:88:f7:78 which was originally auto-assigned.

Well that address is invalid if you try to pass it to the new adapter with the below error:

===============================================================================================================================================

New-NetworkAdapter : Cannot bind parameter 'MacAddress' to the target. Exception setting "MacAddress": "The MAC

address is invalid or is not in the valid range 00:50:56:00:00:00 - 00:50:56:3F:FF:FF."

At C:\SwapNics.ps1:41 char:55

+ New-NetworkAdapter -vm $VM -Type $NICType -MacAddress $MACAdd -StartConnected -N ...

+                                                       ~~~~~~~

    + CategoryInfo          : WriteError: (:) [New-NetworkAdapter], ParameterBindingException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ParameterBindingFailed,VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Cmdlets.Commands.VirtualDevice.NewNet

   workAdapter

===============================================================================================================================================

It seems that whomever created the cmdlet has incorrect validation in their code. as 00:50:56:88:f7:78 is in between 00:50:56:00:00:00 - 00:50:56:3F:FF:FF

likewise for Set-NetworkAdapter...

And with Set-NetworkAdapter you cannot go from -type:Vmxnet3 to -type:e1000 or e1000e, which would have made this whole situation so much less complicated!

Anyhow, figured I would share my fndings and if this is not corrected save someone the multiple hours trying to figure out if it was a context error or something in my code.

Helper process consuming CPU on all vSAN hosts?

I've recently setup a 3-node + witness (2 nodes contributing storage) vSAN cluster and I'm noticing that on all 3 physical hosts, the 'helper' process is at 100+%RUN.  What could be causing this and how can I troubleshoot to determine the cause?

EDIT:  The one alert I see in the vSAN monitoring tab is 'VSAN Disk Balance' but when I manually kick off a rebalance nothing happens (just hangs at 5%).

Re: vCenter 6 and smart card authentication / not prompting for certificate (web client)

I am searching for the same answer.  I am stuck with the error, "Make sure the smart card is inserted properly.  Close your browser window then retry."

WebClientInsertedProperlyRedact.png

I have done the same steps as the Original Poster except that I have not replaced my SSL and user certificates with trusted ones.  I therefore get untrusted certificate warnings before I log in.

I did do the following two steps in order to progress my issue slightly:

- Added my vCenter Server FQDN to the Local Internet sites and Trusted Sites (through Group Policy).

- Installed the Client Integration Plugin

I can log in with Smart Card authentication if I select "Use Windows Session Authentication."  However, I have multiple certificates and do not want to use my Windows session certificate to administer the vCenter Server.   The vSphere Web Client does not prompt me for certificates, so I cannot switch to my other certificate.  Likewise, I do not want to login to Windows and/or open Internet Explorer with my Administrator certificate.  These are not security best business practices; and boy does my organization like their best business practices.

Smart Card certificates work fine for all other websites and applications.

vRops Critical Alert Definition -Error synchronizing user privilege information with VMware Virtual Center

Good morning all,

I keep getting alerts from vRops that state the following:

"Error synchronizing user privilege information with VMware Virtual Center

Error synchronizing user privilege information for a VMware vRealize Authentication Source that corresponds to a VMware Virtual Center instance."
It appears that this alert is generated when a user has a failed attempt to log in. I checked with the users but they are able to log in successfully. Does anyone know what other possible causes are for this type of alert and how I can get rid of it or fix the issue?
Thanks,
Tim

High latencies with backup

We see some quite high latencies when running backups, what is a *normal* increase to expect? For instance - today we saw latency hit ~200ms on our Sexigraf monitoring (example attached).

We're on the latest version of vSAN, Current Dell firmware, Health plugin is reporting green for the cluster.

Networking Questions

The host OS is Windows 7 HOME edition, 64 bit, and I have VMWare Workstation 12 Player installed running Win XP as the virtual machine.

I am not having success getting my network printer to connect to the virtual machine. It is a HP 8600. Printer setup on the XP machine asks for an IP address for the printer but (as far as I can tell) there is none.

I also would like to know if I can get the host OS to detect the contents of the virtual OS, and vice versa. Win 7 HOME apparently does not have network support, I think?
