WIndows screen frozen

I run VM 3.1 on a iMac 10.6.8.  After restarting the computer, I go to VM to run Windows and I get a black screen with a white arrow.  Usually when I click the arrow, Windows starts to un.  But now that screen is frozen.  When i click the arrow, nothing happens except a box pops up saying "It appears other virtual machines are running."  As far as I know, none are running.  I am computer illiterate.  What should I do?

Fusion 8.x and Sierra issues, Internal Error

$

I have two Macs, a 2015 MBP, and a 2013 Mac Pro.  Both were running Fusion 8.1.1 on El Capitan, with nary a problem.  I have a total of 6 VM's of different varieties, two on the MBP (OSX 10.10.5 and Debian 8), and four on the Mac Pro (OSX 10.9.5, 10.10.5, 10.11.6, and Windows 10 with the new edition upgrade).  All of these were working flawlessly on El Capitan, with Fusion 8.1.1.

Now I have upgraded both machines to Sierra, and installed Fusion 8.5.0.  Every one of my virtual machines gives the "Internal Error" message when I try to run it.  I completely uninstalled 8.5.0 on both machines (tracked down every little file that VMWare leaves behind and deleted it), and then installed Fusion 8.1.1 on both machines.  I get the same "Internal Error" when trying to run any of my VM's.  It seems there is some issue between Fusion 8.x and Sierra.  Strange that the behavior is identical on two different pieces of hardware that I have here.

While I still had 8.5.0 installed, I also tried creating a new VM, from an OSX installer app bundle (10.11.6).  This went through the motions of setting up a VM, options and all, but when I click the run button, again the "Internal Error".

Searching for help on this leads to lots of reports of 8.5.0 crashing on Sierra, and lots of old (some very old) reports of the "Internal Error" and what was done in those cases to solve it.  It is not 3D Acceleration.  That is already turned off on all of my VM's.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might try beyond what I have done already?  There don't seem to be enough reports of just a general failure of Fusion to run on Sierra to indicate it is widespread, but it is happening to me on two different machines (different in many ways, hardware-wise).  Thanks for any suggestions.

Unable to use PCoIP with GPU Passthrough

$

I have a whitebox ESXi 5.5u2 host that runs great.  PCoIP works great for a couple of VMs, and GPU passthrough works great as well, but if I want to do both for a particular VM, it won't work simultaneously.  Of the several VMs I run, here are what's worth noting:

  1. I have a Win10 VM that successfully passes through an AMD HD6450. I then hook this up via cat6 ethernet passthrough from my basement (ESXi whitebox host) to our master bedroom and I watch TV on Windows Media Center and 1080p movies via Kodi. It works great!!
  2. I also have a couple of VMs I use PCoIP and the Horizon client with (windows 7 and windows 10) -- works great!
  3. The Issue: I have another Win10 VM that successfully passes through an AMD HD5450 to a monitor. What I'd like to do is use the Horizon client to connect via PCoIP to watch movies/TV.  PCoIP only works if I disable the GPU passthrough.  When the GPU passthrough is set up, I get the notorious black-screen during a PCoIP session and shortly after it times out.  The reason I want to use the GPU passthrough is for hardware acceleration.  If I remove the GPU passthrough, the CPU gets slammed to do the video processing and that's inefficient for my setup... not only that, but the HD videos are a bit choppy (definitely not acceptable).

I've looked at the logs in \ProgramData\VDM\Logs, but not sure which specific one is best to look at.  Since I didn't know which to check, I looked at debug_date_time.txt, the log_date.txt, the pcoip_agent log, and the pcoip_server log.  I don't know the major diff between the logs files, but if someone could explain which to look at, I will even submit them here (if that helps).

Or... Does anyone have advice on how to get this to work with a whitebox ESXi host and a desktop GPU?  I believe it's been done before.  I also have more GPUs to use if need be:

-ATI/AMD Radeon HD6970

-nVidia 200-series GPU somewhere

-GeForce 8400GS I may be able to dig up

-ATI/AMD Radeon HD6450 (currently used on another VM that I don't need pcoip for)

-ATI/AMD Radeon HD5450 (currently trying in the example above with pcoip)

Thanks in advance.

Dell PowerVault MD 34XX/38XX

Buongiorno,

Qualcuno ha mai avuto a che fare con un Dll Power Vault MD 34XX?

Ho il dubbio se creare prima il cluster a livello di vmware e poi creare un group host mapping, ovvero associare un più host ai virtual disk o viceversa.

Grazie mille

Clean up my VMDKs?

$

I setup each VM with split (2GB) files.

I also live on snapshots.  I use them extensively when installing new software, prior to testing.  I then delete the snapshot when the changes are validated.

I have a number of VMs which do not honor, one or both of these settings.

I have orphaned snapshot files, and on one VM I am looking at right now, 10: 50 GB + files.

I have shrunk, cloned, moved, updated VMware Workstation (First noticed on 9, but it wasn't too bad), updated the machine type, moved to another machine, yet the problems persist.

So, can anyone tell me what I am doing which causes this?  I would like to prevent it from happening again.

How can I get a clean fileset?

Any input would be appreciated.

Current configuration  (Please let me know what other details you may need):

Workstation 12.5

64GB RAM

Windows 8.1 host  (The VM's, are Win7, Win8, Win10).  I have not looked at my nix systems since I usually build those to use.

2 - 2TB mirrors, resulting in two logical drives of 2TB using 4 disks.

Thank you in advance.

VMware “Unable to connect to the MKS: Login (username/password) incorrect.” after Upgrade

$

On my home's local network, I have a computer that hosts a VM server using VMware Workstation. Sometimes, my dad needs to use a virtual machine, but since his computer is not powerful enough to handle hosting a VM, I set up his computer with VMware Workstation so that he could connect to mine and use it as the host. This worked fine until today when I upgraded both his computer and mine from VMware Workstation 12.5 to VMware Workstation 12.5.1. Now, whenever he attempts to connect to the virtual machine's display after starting it, VMware freezes for several seconds before displaying an error message stating that VMware is, "Unable to connect to the MKS: Login (username/password) incorrect."

Whenever I first set this configuration up, I had this issue, and resolved it by allow incoming traffic on TCP ports 902 and 903 on the hosting machine as was suggested on this webpage. After the upgrade, the exceptions that I added to my firewall seemed to have been removed, so I added them back, and restarted both computers. Even after this, however, the problem is still occurring.

I went as far as doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of VMware on my dad's computer, using Revo to remove leftover files, but even this did not resolve the issue.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? One thing that is worth noting is that I tried using telnet to determine if my dad's computer could "see" ports 902 and 903. The connection to port 902 worked just fine, but an attempt at connecting to 903 failed. This also happened whenever I tried to telnet to ports 902 and 903 on the host machine. I do not know if the issue with port 903 not connecting existed before because when I first set this up, I did not have the need to check the ports with telnet.

Note: I originally posted this on SuperUser but the lack of response combined with the urgency of the situation has made it necessary for me to seek assistance elsewhere.

Simple shell script to create linkedClones on stand alone ESXi host.

Hey Guys,

Last few days I have been working on creating linkedClones in bulk for some of the testing purpose. Since I did not had my vCenter up and running so I spend few minutes to write a simple script to create a linkClones on standalone ESX host.

My script create full clone of given VM, then creates snapshot on it and starts creating linkedClones from the delta vmdk files (it just create new directory for linkedClone VM's and copies those delta files to new location and then point it to base disk, nothing magic here ).

Now this script is working perfectly fine for me, and I can power on all the VM's which is pointing to base disk. Later I tried creating linkedClones using vCenter API's as well which seems to be doing the similar thing.

So I just want to check with you guys if my script is Ok or thats not the way to do it (this may be unsupported way of creating linkedClones but I just want a way to create linkedClones on standalone esxi host as I may not have vCenter server available everytime) ?

How to use space on two different datastores with one VM

$

Concerning: ESXi 6.0 on a Fujitsu I7 Workstation using the Web-GUI from Win10

I have three physical discs attached with datastore 1 on the first and second disc

datastore 2 on the second disc and datastore 3 on the third physical disc.

It seems impossible to supply a VM on datastore 2 (Linux Debian) with an additional virtual disc on datastore 3

the system always demands to create additional space within datastore 2 instead.

Of course, it would be possible to expand datastore 2 to the third physical disc but it seems to be a bad idea to use

datastores on devices with different speeds. In this case I want to store on slow discs and work on fast discs and not

mix them up.

Can you tell me how to use space in different datastores with one VM?

possibly, the datastore needs to be prepared with a config file for the additional virtual disc, not only

prepared as datastore. Maybe I missed a fundamental detail of administration here.

Thank you for your ideas howtos and tips !

I Need An Expert. How to disable ping for remote networks on an ESXi hosts. Please help.

$

We have spent days on this and have gotten no where.  Here's the deal.  I need to disable ICMP, at a minimum ping/echo, responses from the management IP to all non-local subnets.  So in other words, lets say a random ESXi server's IP is 10.10.10.101/24.  I need all hosts on 10.10.10.x/24 to respond to pings, but all other hosts on other subnets need to be blocked, such as a host on 10.10.20.x/24.

You would think this is straight forward, but it does not behave how the documentation says it does.  I have tried adding rules for TCP/UDP port 7 manually to the host firewall, and only allowing the local subnet, but I'm still pinging away from other hosts on other subnets.  Even after refreshing, unloading, reloading, refreshing again, etc.  I realize adding manual entries to services.xml will not be persistent through a reboot unless I put a vib together, which I will if that's part of a solution that acutally works, but I'm unable to get ping blocked at all.  It seems like it's controlled by a mechanism at a higher level than the firewall, which makes no sense to me.

Any insight, ideas, or hep would be greatly appreciated.  In the end I need to lock down a lot more than ping to the local network, but that's the most important and a very good start.  One might suggest just removing the default gateway, or blocking it at the default gateway.  That's not an option here.  It must be done on the ESXi host.  One more thing, most of these hosts are currently running ESXi 6.0 Update 2, although a couple might still be at baseline 6.0

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Add ESXI Host to vCenter Server

$

I am kind of new to vSphere6 but I have to know this stuff for work purposes.

I have a virtual Domain environment in VMware Workstation that is set up like this:

  • 1 ESXi Host
  • 1 Domain Controller Running DNS (Server 2012)
  • 1 vCenter Server (Server 2012)
  • 1 Work Station (Win7 Pro)

I can connect to the vCenter Server (Server 2012) through vSphere Web Client (using Win7 Pro) (https://vcsa.contoso.local/vsphere-client/?csp). Once I am in, I click on "Hosts and Clusters" and I have nothing in my inventory (no ESXi IP address shows up).

How do I add an ESXi Host to the vCenter Server?

Thx,

P.S. I am using the evaluation version of all the VMware products. Everything seems to be working fine up until this point.

VCenter Server Heartbeat 6.6 Update 2 NFID.SYS driver not signed

Has anyone else had an issue with the NFID.sys driver not being signed? I am testing the upgrade from 6.6 Update1 to 6.6 Update 2 in the lab on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit OS.  After the upgrade finished data replication from the primary to secondary server no longer functions since it can not load the NFID.sys driver.  The error message is that it is not a signed driver.  I can disable the device driver signature check at boot by using F8, but once OS is rebooted the driver fails to load again.

Hopefully VMware/Neverfail can provide a signed driver.  Disabling device driver signature checks is not something that we can take to a production systems.

I do have  a support call open and the engineer said they would have to contact Neverfail. Currently waiting for an update.

Local datastores missing after Bios upgrade

Hi

Used to have two visible datastores, each on its own local HDD, one of which contains the vmware 5.5.0 OS

But neither are visible since a bios upgrade, which was done using a liveCD and with both HDD's unplugged (ie SATA cables unplugged)

Can see how it manages to boot  this way.

Syslog repeats multiple times:

jumpstart: VmkCtl: Boot device not available as in:

Any advice anyone?

VMware Workstation Pro Newbie

Downloaded a trial version of Workstation Pro 12.5.

Am attempting to get this to work on a Win10 Home laptop with Core i7-7500U processor (16G RAM, 1T disk).

Install went OK.

Attempting to start a VM gives me errors about vt-x support not being enabled.

Intel seems to say that VT-x is supported by this processor.

I found one web posting which seems to suggest that Workstation Pro will not work with this processor but have not found it listed in either a "definitely works" or "definitely doesn't work" list in the KB.

Anyone have any insights for this particular CPU/Host OS.

Thanks

Hi Expert,

Last night I took snapshot to my vmware workstation when I use it this morning I got the error message

Unable to open file "E:\Backup_SAP VM\_SAP VM\Windows Server 2008 R2 x64-000009.vmdk":

One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot.

Then I found solution to fix this problem as below link

Unable to open .vmdk file. One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snaps…

  1. cd /d "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation"
  2. cd /d D:\win2k3
  3. md Clone
  4. C:vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -r "Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition-000002.vmdk" -t 0 "Clone\Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.vmdk"

For step 4 I got error message as  attached file.

Please help me for this case because I have a lot of configure in this VM and I have to present it as master project of master degree on next Monday.

Thank you.

Network Issues between MSCS nodes

$

Hi every one

I have a SQL cluster with two nodes and each one is living in different host the issue is that when I copy a file from one node to another the copy speed is like 20mb/s but when I copy one file from one node to another standalone VM in the vmware cluster the copy speed is 100mb/s, my question is why the copy speed is lower between the mcsc nodes?

The VMs OS is Windows server 2012 R2 in all the VMs and the nic is vmxnet3.

I have revised the cpu with esxtop and it seems to be ok,

Thanks
