How to stop alerts while ESXi Host is in maintenance mode

$

Hello,

When we work on ESXi servers that are in Maint.mode (done via vCenter), our vROPS 6.1 still creates alerts because we remove a physical NIC uplink for example. I'd actually expect vROPS to be totally silent about an ESXi server until we take it out of maintenance mode, but nope, it still generates alerts. Why?

Is this expected behaviour7by design or am I doing something wrong ?

If this is by design, would it help if I put the "host object" of that ESXi server inside vROPS (Inventory explorer etc.) in "vROPS maintenance mode". Does that shut up vROPS ?

Regardless, I really expect vROPS to be so clever as to simply ignore all the horrible things we do to an ESXi server in maintenance mode, until it is taken back into production.

In other words, It should be "vCenter maintenance mode = vROPS maintenance mode" so to say.

Example:  we removed an Uplink from a dvSwitch and gave it to another dvSwitch while the host was in Maint.mode (via vCenter).  Still, we get these kind of alerts.

Trouble loading Views with Trends

I'm trying to provide a view for a support team of all of their VMs CPU usage for the last 30 days, after configuring a new view it just sits at Loading.

Initially I though that this was caused by the amount of data so I tried to look at Virtual Machine CPU Diagnose view for a single VM, this also sits at the loading page and never completes?

Any ideas? Does this affect anybody else?

"vDS dvs port cannot be found" when deleting a port mirroring session

$

Hi,

I have the following scenario:

- create a distributed port mirroring session

- add one source port and one destination port

- delete the vm marked as destination together with the portgroup it belongs to

Then when I try to edit/delete the mirroring session, I get the following error:

"The object or item referred could not be found. vDS dvs port 160 cannot be found".

Is there any workaround for deleting the port mirroring session (without deleting the distributed switch)?

Thanks,

Adriana

Sorting VM's into Resource Pools

$

Hi

I have a list of VM's, Resource Pools, CPU Share Level in the RP and, Memory Share Level forthe Resource Pools

Below is an example

$list contains

VmNameResourcePoolCpuShareMemShare
MyVM1Low PriorityLowLow
MyVM2Normal PriorityNormalNormal
MyVM3High PriorityHighHigh

All the VM's exist within the same Cluster but, are not necessarily in the correct Resource Pool

All of the Resource Pools may not even exist

How can I check to see if a Resource Pool exists within the Cluster,

  • if it doesn't, have it created with the correct CPU/Mem Share levels (no Custom Levels defined)
  • Move the respective VM into it

What I've come up with is

$list = import-csv $BiggerListofVMDetails | select VmName, ResourcePool, CpuShare,MemShare

foreach ($item in $list) {

     if (  (get-cluster $cluster | get-resourcepool | select Name) -ne $item.ResourcePool ) {

          write "The RP does not exist in the Cluster, need to create it"

          new-resourcepool -location $cluster -name $item.ResourcePool -CpuShareLevel $item.CpuShare -MemShareLevel $item.MemShare

          write "the RP has been created, time to move the VM into it"

     }

     move-vm $item.VmName -destination $item.ResourcePool

}

HBAs High latency issue

$

Hi all,

We have high latency (90-100 ms) in HBAs. This problem occurs only with 4 virtual machines. These virtual machines are Red Hat Enterprise Linux with GFS2. If we isolate them into a single ESX the latency remains in 90-100 ms. We are using Fiber Channel and we have 16 paths to a LUN.

Additional info:

IOPS = 1000

Red Hat Enterprise Linux with GFS2

Software running in the VMs = SAS Grid.

Storage = IBM DS8870

Any ideas?

Intermitent network disconnect in VM using E1000E NIC

$

Hi,

We just installed three new Windows Server 2012 and one new Windows 8 VMs on ESXi 5.1. On those VMs, we get a lot of errors in the System Event log about network disconnects. According to the logs, the network disconnects for about one second as we get another event saying that a network connection was established at 1 Gbps just after. Just on the day of January 28, this problem occured 85 times on a single server VM.

Those VMs are using the recommended E1000E NIC with vmx-09 hardware version. The Tools are installed and are current. All VMs are connected to the same vSwitch which has a dedicated physical port to the gigabit network switch (no NIC teaming and no VLAN tagging). The VMs are running from the same datastore that uses local disks setup in RAID 10 with a hardware RAID controller (LSI 2108 chipset).

Of course, when the alledged disconnect occurs, Windows shuts down momentarily network bound services (such as NetBIOS Helper service) and brings it back right away when the reconnection occurs. This annoying problem also causes interruptions in file transfers on network shares, so it is not just a harmless error that can be ignored.

Here is an example of the disconnect event:

Log Name:      System
Source:        e1iexpress
Date:          2013-01-29 10:53:13
Event ID:      27
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      --- censored by me! ---
Description:
Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection
Network link is disconnected.

Here is the reconnection 1 second later:

Log Name:      System
Source:        e1iexpress
Date:          2013-01-29 10:53:14
Event ID:      32
Task Category: None
Level:         Information
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      --- censored by me! ---
Description:
Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection
Network link has been established at 1Gbps full duplex.

Here are some interesting facts about this problem:

  • We checked the physical link to the host and everything is fine. We don't have any disconnection reported by the host or the switch.
  • The problem occurs in all VM which have E1000E NIC, but not at the same time.
  • Changing the VM NIC type to E1000 solves the problem: no more network disconnection reported by the VM and file transfers are not interrupted anymore.
  • The disconnects are not evenly spaced in time. It may occur many times in the same minute and then nothing for more than an hour.

Has anyone had this kind of problem before? Any clue about what may be the cause?

We can still use the workaround we found and change the NICs to E1000 but it is not the one recommended for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

Thanks for your help!

Hi

VSAN traffic will goes between the two sites via pair fiber 10 GB Switches will be used are HP Virtual Connect 10_10D (2 VCs per site). I am assuming in this case I will need 4 Trancievers per site to added to virtual connect  for VSAN Traffic L2

and 2 Rj45 Transivers For Management traffic and   2 for Rj45 for vMotion.

Am I assuming right ?

vRA 7.1 Windows 2012 R2 blueprint with AD policy

$

0

I'm trying to build a Windows 2012 R2 blueprint that joins an AD server automatically and puts the computer in a specific OU specified.

I created a vRO endpoint and pointed it to my AD server, provided all the necessary info (as far as I can tell).

I created an AD Policy and specified the OU I want machines to go in.

I applied the AD Policy to the business group so anyone within the business group who deploys machines will have the AD Policy applied.

I created a Windows 2012 R2 template (nothing special here)

I created a vsphere customization script that sets the admin password and joins the domain.

Test 1

I created a blueprint, full clone of the windows 2012 R2 template and specified the customization script.

Result: It deployed the machine and joined the domain, but the computer object was still in the default Computers OU

I check the vRO Endpoint and found a typo in the domain name, fixed.

Test 2

same as above, hoping things would work due to the typo.

Result: same as test one

Test 3

same blueprint, modified AD endpoint and provided new shared session credentials (thinking authentication issue)

Result: same as test one

Test 4

same blueprint, modified vsphere customization script to not join domain (thinking AD endpoint and ADPolicy will join the machine to the domain)

Result: server did not join domain

Test 5

same blueprint, removed customization script from blueprint (thinking customization script is interfering with vRA joining machine to domain)

Result: server did not join domain.

At this point I'm not sure how to proceed. I feel I'm missing a step (or two)

Some questions I have:

1. Where can I find logs for the Active Directory Endpoint? I would like to see if it provides any clues as to whether or not my AD Endpoint is even config'd properly

2. For the AD endpoint shared session credentials, what format do I use for the username (the docs do not mention anything like this, just provide a username) so do I use <username> or <domain> \ <username or <username>@<domain>...or does it even matter?

3. do I even need to specify the vsphere customization script within the blueprint?

4. Is there any other step within the blueprint I need to do to get the AD Policy to work?

Defect: solutionsCategory issue with 6.5 RC

$
0
0

I have attached a modified ChassisRackVSphereUI sample application to demonstrate an issue with the solutionsCategory extension running the the 6.5 RC client.

Description:

An application that provides inventory list views in both a solutionsCategory and in the Global Inventory Lists causes issues when navigation occurs from the solutionsCategory:

  1. Two view lists are loaded instead of one.
  2. After loading two views the Back button fails to move back (ends up on the inventory list again).

In order to have inventory lists in both the solutionsCategory and Global Inventory list I added a new template instance for vsphere.core.inventorylist.objectCollectionTemplate to the sample application.

So the application will two different chassis lists;

       <variable name="listViewId" value="com.vmware.samples.chassis.list"/>

One for the solutionsCategory and the one for the Global Inventory Lists. The chassis app already adds itself to the Global Inventory List. I added it to a solutions category.

   <!-- Add rack to the solutions inventory list -->

   <templateInstance id="com.vmware.samples.rack.solution.objectCollectionTemplateInstance">

       <templateId>vsphere.core.inventorylist.objectCollectionTemplate</templateId>

       <variable name="namespace" value="com.vmware.samples.rackCollection4"/>

       <variable name="title" value="#{rackLabel}"/>

       <variable name="icon" value="#{rack}"/>

       <variable name="objectType" value="samples:Rack"/>

       <variable name="listViewId" value="com.vmware.samples.rack.list"/>

       <variable name="parentUid" value="com.vmware.samples.chassis.solution"/>

   </templateInstance>

Steps to reproduce:

1.  From the Home page choose the “Chassis App” solution.

2.  Click on the Rack inventory list.

Observed:

First the list view for the solutions category is loaded, followed by the list view for the Global Inventory list. Note: I added a one second sleep the Rack data provider to make this easy to observer.

Expected:

Only the solutions category list view is loaded. This is the behavior on the 6.0 client.

3. Press the Back button.

Observed:

The solutions category list view is loaded and then the global inventory list again, not allowing the Back button to make any progress.

Expected:

Move back to the solutions category view.

This issue causes our solutionsCategory to be unusable. Please let me know if you need any addition information or if a workaround exists.

Thanks,

-Darrell

Office 2013 - Outlook previewer not working

$

Wonder if anyone can help, bit of a weird one, I have successfully thinapped Office 2013 and it appears to be working fine except for one thing, the previewer in Outlook will not work, when you click on an attachment to preview it either comes up with "unable to load dll oart.dll ... access denied" or the following message "This file can't be previewed because ofan error in the Microsoft Word previewer", the access denied message has me wondering but that dll is present in the captured package in the Office15 folder.

Please see details of the thinapp:

- Office Standard 2013 32bit captured on Windows 7 vanilla 32bit, straight capture, no plugins etc

- Steaming to Window 7 64bit (not sure if that is an issue? everything I've read said it should be fine streaming Office 32bit to Windows 7 64bit)

- Using ThinApp 5.1.0

- Outlook previewer is working fine locally on the thinapp machine

- I'm only testing the previewer on other Office documents (word, excel etc)

This is a minor issue but our users will be expecting the previewer to be working.

Any ideas?

unexplained high write latencies

$

Hello everybody!

I have a little problem and need your help with it ;-)

We`re running a small 2-node vsan Metro Cluster distributed over 2 datacenters with a virtual witness host for our dedicated dmz. The vsan Cluster was setup in a classical hybrid fashion. Now, I`ve observed relatively high write latencies (up to 50ms) on almost all vm`s or at least on them which issue a moderate amount of parallel io`s. I tried to delimit the issue by monitoring the different stack latencies. This means, from a host perspective, we do not have congestions on the vmkernel layer, the storage Controller and neither on the Cache disks. No high latencies were found there. So the issue has to be be between vmkernel and guest os. Then my guess was, it must be the network since all writes gets mirrored to the other host. The Problem is, there is no Counter that I know which would show the replication latency in a vsan environment. So I tried to test it using the esxcli Network diag command and did some pings with 4k sizes and the roundtrip time is at about 1 ms. So also nothing found here. Do you guys have any idea or did I overlooked something?

Thanks & Regards

Manuel
