Why is the MAX aggregate function used in SQL when joining fields created in the Designer??

From the Certified Developer course, you can see the left join to include fields from the SU_EXTENTION_DATA table. Why is the MAX used when retrieving these values???

! Custom begin -------------------

LEFT JOIN

(SELECT

REF_NO "REF",

MAX(CASE WHEN EXTENSION_FIELD_REF = 500033 THEN VALUE_DATE END) "DOB",

MAX(CASE WHEN EXTENSION_FIELD_REF = 500034 THEN VALUE_STRING END) "E_CONTACT",

MAX(CASE WHEN EXTENSION_FIELD_REF = 500035 THEN VALUE_STRING END) "E_CONT_NO",

MAX(CASE WHEN EXTENSION_FIELD_REF = 500036 THEN VALUE_TEXT END) "MED_HIST",

MAX(CASE WHEN EXTENSION_FIELD_REF = 500037 THEN SELECT_TEXT END) "PREF_CONTACT"

FROM SU_EXTENSION_DATA

LEFT JOIN SU_SELECT_VALUES ON

SU_EXTENSION_DATA.VALUE_SELECT = SU_SELECT_VALUES.REF

WHERE CORE_ENTITY = 5

GROUP BY REF_NO) X ON AR_PERSON.REF = X.REF

! Custom end -------------------

can't access iSCSI target from second ESX box

I have successfully connected to an iSCSI target running on Windows Server 2012 from one ESX 5.1 box and created a datastore. Unfortnately, I can't get a second ESX 5.1 box to connect to the same iSCSI target. I have added the IP address of both ESX boxes as acceptable initiators for the Server 2012 target.

I have also successfully configured the iSCSI software adapter on the second ESX box to point to the target. It even found the IP address with a dynamic discovery.

Unfortunately, even after I set all this up I can't "Add Storage" under the "Storage" option in the Configuration tab for the ESX box. When I choose "Add Storage" no targets show up to choose from.

Is this simply a limit of ESX boxes, which only permits one ESX initiator per iSCSI target?

For what it's worth, I am using vCenter to manage my ESX boxes.

iSCSI Problems in ESXi 5.1

I'm trying to get iSCSI working with my home lab setup.

I'm running FreeNAS 8.3.0-Release with iSCSI running on top of ZFS.  My datastore consists of two 1TB SATA drives in a striped zdev.  I have created 6 vdevs on this and am sharing one for each vm that I plan to host on the ESXi host.  I've had this setup once successfully, but in testing it was torn down and rebuilt several times.  I now cannot get the iSCSI link to work reliably.

The network consists of one cisco 3750G switch.  It's configured for L2 only and the vlan setup for iSCSI is only configured on two ports (one for ESXi and the other for FreeNAS).  The two servers are both running intel e1000 nics that are dedicated for iSCSI traffic, and FreeNAS, ESXi and the switch are configured for jumbo frames.

Currently, my switch interface is dropping out serveral times a minute on the ESXi interface.  Because of this, it's throwing "istgt_iscsi.c:5239:worker: ***ERROR*** iscsi_read_pdu() failed" errors on the FreeNAS box.  It has done the same thing before moving iSCSI traffic to it's own NICs, as well as before setting up jumbo frames and upgrading the ESXi box to 5.1.

If I've left any important info out, please let me know.  If anyone has ideas of what to check, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks

Suddenly getting email notifications for discussions I've never visited!

I suspect this is a Forum software bug, but I'm suddenly getting email notifications for activity on random forum discussion threads I've never visited.  When I go to the discussions, in the Actions section on the right I don't see an option to shut off tracking, probably because I've never turned on tracking to begin with!  Does anyone know what's going on, and how to stop this from happening?

Thanks,

Scott

I can not clone my VM

Hi,

I am very new to the world of VMware. I setup a host, installed ESxi 5.1, and then from a second PC connected to my host using VM client.

Then installed server2008 and now I want to clone this VM so that I can create a virtual network in order to practice for my Microsoft exam. The help files suggest that I can right click on the VM and select clone. The problem is, I do NOT have this option when I right click, so what am I supposed to do? any idea anyone please.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,

How to down grade ESXi 5.1 to ESXi 4

Hi,

I have installed ESXi 5.1 on my system. I managed to install VM server 2008 with no problem. However, when I try to install XP or Windows 7 the system fails to see the SATA hard drive. I consulted with motherboard manufacturer (Gigabyte) and they said ESXi 5 does not support Intel ICH7 (my motherboard) . ESXi only support ICH9 and above.

Since I do need to install Windows 7 in order to create a simple network in order to prepare myself for Microsoft exam, I do need to remove ESXi5.1 and replace it with ESXi 4.

I don't see any facility within vSphare client to remove my ESXi5.1. How do I do this?

Thank you for any help in advance.

P2V Conversion Failure BAD_CONFIG_INFO Stop Error 000074 In Windows 7

$

Hello All,

I am currently attempting a P2V from a Lenovo X230 running Windows 7 Enterprise to Workstation 9.

This is an attempt to P2V from an SSD to Workstation 9

Using conversion tool (5.1), I ran into an earlier KB article regarding the STOP 7B issue that is known and has a resolution:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2002106

After applying this fix, I reboot the Virtual machine, and then run into another error:

I get a BSOD with BAD_CONFIG_INFO Stop Error

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/windows-7-0x00000074-startup-blue-screen/e9e412ae-013c-4fb7-93a4-e369dd1718dc

The link above references the stop error, not the actual steps that got me there (I wasn't messing around with the MSCONFIG)

I have attempted the following:

Last known configuration from the start menu This resulted in same error Stop 74

I have rebuilt the MBR and fix boot, although the system was booting, it was only after about 50 secs that the BSOD appears

I have gone into the recovery console from Win7 DVD, and attempted a BCD, with no avail

I am kind of stumped at this point, and am looking for guidance on how I can get this P2V working...I will provide additional information as needed, just not sure what I should include at this point

Thanks all

I am planning to create a small VI for about 20VM Windows Servers and 200 users using a c3000 in a configuration similar with the one below:

1xc3000 enclosure

3x BL460c /BL465 - for ESX hosts

2x SB40c - for shared storage

1x 448c - for tape backup

Question: Do anybody tried a similar configuration? I will really appreciate your advice and support.

I am looking forward for your feedback.

vShield VXLAN with Cisco Nexus 1000v Issues

Here is my setup

1 virtual center 5.1

4 hosts 5.1

Cisco Nexus 1000v.4.2.1.SV2.1.1a

2 uplink trunks

12 veth port profiles

vShield 5.1.2

vCloud Director 5.1.2

I followed the vShield / Nexus integration whitepapers and I believe all is setup properly, however here is the issue

I created an vApp in a vCloud org with 12 VM's 2 isolated routed networks on an edge gateway. Now guests that are on the same hosts can ping each other but not other guests on another host. if guests are on the same host as the edge gateway, those guests can ping across the edge gateway as long as all the targets are on the same host.

what am I missing?

I was so happy when the script was running, but I made a mistake

I wrote a nice short script to move any VMs that had a thick disk format to a datastore and make it thin.  Here is what I have:

#Simple line, just getting the VMs with a thick HD and saving it to a variable

$thickVMs = Get-VM | where { ($_ | Get-HardDisk).storageformat -eq "Thick" }

#Here is what I needed.  Because we have different datacenters, I needed to make sure the VM was getting moved to a datastore within its own datacenter, so for the current VM, I retrieved it's current host, and the datastores that it sees.  Then I had

#to make sure that the datastore wasn't one named "ISOs", and that it wasn't the current datastore where the VM is now.  Then I needed to choose the datastore with the most freespace, and move the VM there and make it thin.

foreach  ($VM in $thickVMs) {

Move-VM -VM $VM -Datastore ( $vm | Get-VMHost | Get-Datastore | where { ($_.name) -ne "ISOs" -and $_.name -ne ($vm | Get-Datastore) } | sort FreespaceGB -Descending | select -First 1) -DiskStorageFormat Thin

}

I tested it out with some small test VMs, and everything appeared to work, but when I ran the script, and this was hours later, what I found out was that everything was going to 1 datastore.  The "sort FreespaceGB -Descending | select -First 1" section isn't changing to a new datastore that has more space, it only selected the first one that had more space, and VMs were moved there, and the datastore almost filled up.

I just don't understand why this happened.  I thought that it would loop to each new VM, get the current datastore with the most space, and dynamically change as the datastore freespace changed.  What am I missing?

Creating a disaster recovery plan

Recently got asked to assist with disaster recovery planning for our big upgrade

Current setup is

VCenter 5.1

ESX 4.1.0 build # 988178

2 Clusters

1 Production Pool

14 Hosts

60 VMs

Goal is to have a complete disaster recovery plan put together and demonstrate it working on my test environment I am still setting up

I typically would perform vicfg-cfgbackup command to backup our host configurations however ESX does not allow this command to function

After some research it is looking like there is no one command to run and that I have to manually backup all the files  is this right?

I do have CommVault 8.0 available as well I just need a solution/plan that will allow for a complete recovery upon failure of the upgrade.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!
