Bluetooth and pairing - XP and Ubuntu

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and VMWare Player 4.0.4 build-744019.

With both Ubuntu 64 bit and XP Home 32 bit I can see the presence of the USB bluetooth adapter i.e. the OS knows it has bluetooth capability, but cannot select it in the VMWare Player menus as a removable device or in the settings menu as a physical device.

When I search for bluetooth devices using the guest operating system it shows me devices known to the host operating system (not all of which are present and turned on).

When I try to pair with a device the guest sends out a pin but the bluetooth device (a mobile phone) doesn't see the pairing request.

I can pair O.K. from native Windows 7 or from native Ubuntu.

Does anyone have experience with this, and can suggest what I can do to pair from within a VM to a bluetooth device?

I can't take direct control of the USB dongle as it doesn't show up as a device.

I really want to run Wammu from within Ubuntu but I have tried XP as well to see if the issue is Ubuntu specific.

Cheers
