version_number in the cells table

I was looking into the cells table while troubleshooting an issue and noticed a version_number field.  Two of the cells show a version number of 5 while one of the cells showed a version number of 96.  Is there any sort of data dictionary or schema reference that would show what the possible values and uses of the fields are in vCloud Director?
